I usually don’t watch trailers but when I came across this one, I was compelled to. Honestly, I wasn’t totally convinced about Zendaya as an actress after seeing her in Dune or Spider-man. I was interested to see her performance in a film like this (at least as much as I could see in a trailer).

The trailer definitely did its job. I had to see this film to learn what this shocking secret was even if I had to see it alone (I DID have to see it alone).

First off, if you haven’t seen this film, I recommend that you do. I’m going to discuss spoilers and I think this film is best watched blind. Stop reading if you care to.

Based on the trailer and how shocked the characters appeared to be, I thought the big secret was that Zendaya’s character was a murderer, a cannibal, or a terrorist of some sort. To me, the fact that she had school-shooting ideations didn’t seem like a big deal. I’m sure that thought has run through the minds of most American students at least once. I know she had access to weapons, practiced shooting and made a plan which seems a bit extreme but she didn’t actually go through with it. I think you’re either a school shooter or you’re not. Since she didn’t go through with it, I feel as though this should’ve been a non-issue. She even went deaf in one ear. Isn’t that punishment enough?

Anyway, I became even more interested in how the film’s plot would unfold after the revelation because the other characters’ reactions were very unreasonable in my opinion.

I think an appropriate reaction would have been to recognize how insane it was that she got so close to committing such an atrocity but realize that she had sense enough to back out. She must have been in a very fragile emotional state at the time and a good friend would be consoling Zendaya’s character instead of ostracizing her. It’s laughable that her friends were clutching their pearls and chastising her when they actually did horrible things while she only had thoughts.

I was surprised that her future husband (Robert Pattinson’s character) spent so much time considering whether she was a psychopath rather than determining whether she was fully rehabilitated or needed additional support to heal from whatever trauma she dealt with as a child.

This film perfectly illustrates how hypocritical people can be and how quickly they write others off without pausing for a moment to critically examine an individual’s situation yet they would want someone to give them a little grace if they find themselves in a similar situation.
